As our heroes celebrate their successful first mission, Margravene abruptly introduces them to the final member of their squad: Exataerg, the half-orc paladin. The complete group wastes little time, heading to the holding cells to interrogate the two captive thieves. Various threats and questionably legal plea deals prove useless against the first prisoner, an obviously hardened thief. Two important facts are discovered, though: a large organized criminal group exists in the city, and its members are not eager to betray each other. Luckily for the heroes, the second prisoner is far more cooperative. He proves to merely be a desperate, impoverished citizen contracted by the Organization, and reveals that he was given instructions by a cloaked man at the Boarthrush Inn in Little Sutherford.
Following their vaguely successful first interrogation, our heroes meet with Margravene to discuss their results and receive a new mission. Unfortunately, their mentor shrugs off the very idea of organized crime in the home city of Tovichco’s Light, and instead allows them to choose an unrelated task to complete. Magical shoe retrieval beats out budget meetings and cat rescue after a quick vote. The fact that the mission would conveniently bring them in the direction of the Boarthrush Inn never crossed their minds, of course. Quickly picking up the magical shoes, Margravene’s Brawlers trek deep into the prophetically named Little Suthorford without incident. At the Inn, Exataerg quickly detects four evil presences within. However, Alexander is immediately mistaken for a child by the bartender, Sonny, and struggles to explain his circumstances after failing to pass as a Kinder. Bob, a frustrated patron, becomes angered by the argument between Sonny and Alex, reaching his breaking point after Sora and Baron Wasteland also become involved. One punch is all it takes to throw the entire Inn into chaos.
Viso, originally distracted by lackluster sitar playing, is one of the few to notice the evil group escaping behind the bar. As Exataerg, Baron Wasteland, and Alexander dealt with the drunk bar patrons, Sora and Viso fought a crossbow wielding criminal. Sora, having miraculously avoided killing anyone with her powerful fire breath earlier, lost herself in the heat of battle and caved in the skull of her foe with a vicious mace strike. Paralyzed by the thought of having actually killed another, Viso and Alexander had to follow after the other criminals alone. In the basement of the Inn, the pair witnessed one cloaked evil-doer escaping through a tunnel while a powerful goblin confronted them. Soon after the rest of the Brawlers ran down the stairs to join them. While Exataerg was able to skillfully knock the goblin unconscious, Sora once again crushed the head of a foe in combat. To make matters worse, she had also severely burned an innocent bystander early on. Only time will tell if she’ll ever truly recover from the experience.
Searching the goblin, Viso discovers four platinum coins, a find that confounds both the group and two newly arrived Guilders. With new questions and no answers, our heroes must now return to Tovichco’s Light and tell Margravene what happened.
