Graduation day has arrived, and the newest initiates of Tovichco’s Light are about to become true Fledglings! After a brief motivational speech from Zaltarish, leader of the Order, the Fledglings are organized into five person squads. The final squad consists of pompous Alexander Loup, a talented human warlock rumored to never age; zealous Ophinshtalahjiir Sora, a dragonborn cleric obsessed with etiquette; peculiar Baron Wasteland, a human wizard and self-proclaimed ruler of the Wasteland; hero-worshiping Viso Rai, an overeager dragonborn monk who loves combat and legends; and the mysterious Orc, a paladin who missed the ceremony for unknown reasons. Our heroes are assigned the notoriously gruff Margravene as their mentor, who immediately orders them to prove their worth with combat training. Their first opponents as a team are two animated swords. Though Sora’s attempt to breath fiery death ends in embarrassment, everyone else exhibits at least some competence, with Alexander finishing off both swords with his Eldritch Blasts. The next battle against a suit of animated armor goes poorly, however. Baron Wasteland and Viso are both knocked unconscious in a single blow, rescued by Sora’s clerical intervention. Incredibly cautious Alexander once again ends the fight with an Eldritch Blast.
After the sparring session, our heroes are led into an office to receive their first official mission. Unfortunately, Baron Wasteland takes offense to a rather rude orc, knocking him out cold with a quick Ray of Frost. An enraged Margravene hands down demerits to her students, ordering them to pick up her back medication from the Inn as additional punishment. Their short trip is uneventful, with Inkeeper Willoughby expressing an unsubtle admiration of Margravene and Baron Wasteland grabbing ale. After witnessing a merchant being robbed, though, the group rushes into action. While Baron Wasteland ensures the safety of the victim the mugger is cornered in an alleyway. Viso and Sora flank the thief and apprehend him easily. Two associates of the thief attempt to intervene; one is burned alive by Baron Wasteland’s terrifying Chromatic Orb, the second breaks down from Alexander’s Hideous Laughter.
Returning to the Order with both the medication and two felons, our heroes earn a hint of respect from Margravene, aided by the careful decision to name their squad after her: Margravenes Brawlers.
