As our heroes recover from their first bar brawl, Exataerg the Surprisingly Stealthy disappears into the crowd. Lacking a competent tracker, the remaining novices leave their half-orc companion to his own devices, and dutifully complete their original shoe delivery mission. Unfortunately they must then reveal their unauthorized field trip to Margravine. Expecting harsh retribution, the Brawlers’ instead receive a mere verbal warning against future shenanigans. Their discovery of a goblin in the city is deemed concerning enough for a cover up, and far above their pay grade. The group naturally and unanimously decides to ignore most of Margravine’s orders. Alexander, Viso, and Baron Wasteland head to the Light’s library to gather information. Perd, a bookish acquaintance of Alexander, has already heard rumors of the goblin, and is absolutely giddy. Narrowly avoiding a long-winded history of Ithika’s gobins, Alexander coerces Perd into keeping the rumors alive. Meanwhile, zealous Sora has become traumatized by her ruthless-but-justified-in-the-context double murder. She initially seeks guidance from her mentor, Thrasgrour the dwarven cleric; his therapist credentials prove…lackluster. He begins by telling her “all who stand against us are evil” and quickly becomes sidetracked by a quest for fertilizer. Sora performs a tactical retreat to the chapel for prayer.
A new day begins, and Margravine decides the best way to keep the Brawler’s out of trouble is to lure them out of the city with a respectable mission. Caleb, son of Belt the farmer, has requested the Light’s aid, claiming strange beasts have attacked their farm. The bait is irresistible to our heroes, who continue to ignore the missing pet epidemic ravaging the city. Exataerg remains elusive, and is readily abandoned by his companions. As they depart, a friendly guard warns the Brawlers of gnolls attacking travelers. Viso painfully acquires a gnoll spear during the inevitable ambush, and manages to regain consciousness through sheer adrenaline before being wrecked by an unsportsmanlike bite attack. Sora’s untreated blood lust motivates her to almost single-handily murder the gnolls.
Fortunately, the heroes safely arrive at Belt’s Farm. Belt treats the group to lunch, wherein Baron Wasteland declares himself a great explorer and the farmer reveals he has trapped some of the monsters in his barn. The Brawlers bravely venture into the unknown, discovering the monsters to be terrifying giant beetle-like creatures. The beasts are swiftly driven away, though Sora’s mace is mysteriously rusted during the encounter. A baby monster is also found abandoned in the barn. Collecting the infant as loot, our heroes bid Belt and Caleb farewell, emboldened by their first mission to lack collateral damage.
